what a hodgepodge of things to say.
first off, i still can’t believe it, but i didn’t get sick…at all! my stomach churned for a day, but all settled well in the end, even after finding out it wasn’t mutton kebabs, but goat kebabs. yeah, i know.
after getting my haircut today for the first time (at an expensive place for $3 rather than 50¢ on the street), i stopped by...
let the digestion begin
after class today i took a spontaneous walk to nizamuddin with sameer who works at the language school. he lives in nizamuddin west and wanted to take me to this place in nizamuddin nagar for biryani and samosas. these unplanned experiences are the best. a walk into the heart of an historic muslim area, to which i’ve been before, but never with a resident and never to the back gulleys...
republic day festivities in nainital, uttarakhand
happy republic day
i celebrated republic day yesterday outside of delhi, traveling 8 hours up to nainital in the foothills of the himalayas. it was a beautiful weekend that started with strangers and ended with friends. it’s amazing how much you can get to know people in such a short amount of time. if you travel with strangers, even for only a few days, and you’re in a place with no internet or cell...
just in case the still photos don’t cut it…and before someone claims that i’m not the one cooking, i asked Bulan to stir it while i filmed. i did manage to pull this one off.
coming home today. this is the main street in the neighborhood called hospital marg (hospital road). there’s a hospital nearby, which has become a handy landmark. i’m riding in an auto rickshaw or three wheeler. this is what i take everywhere. today i negotiated in hindi and refused to pay more than pachaas paise - Rs. 50 (about $1). this is still way too much, but hey...
perceived fashion security
so there have been a few small things every day I’ve found amusing or interesting and worth mentioning.
i always enjoy seeing people wearing funny things on the street that are only funny because you know the story behind them and you know the person wearing it doesn’t and wouldn’t even care. like at a wedding once, i saw this old woman struggling up the stairs into the church,...
omelette, garlic toast, cappuccino, and VH1
everytime i come back to delhi, it looks different. the metro is spreading across the city like davey jones in pirates of the caribbean. public works projects are tearing up the place in an effort to rebuild it in time for the commonwealth games. international franchises are setting up shop at staggering speeds - christian dior, louis vuitton, french connection, mango, guess, marks &...
delhi or bust
namaste ji! this is it! the day has come! thankfully, i am not going alone, just as i did not get to this point alone. each of you has contributed to my life in different ways and i owe a great deal of thanks to you all for making this exciting moment possible. so i’m inviting you to join me on this journey!
this blog will be the spot for updates and postings on how life is going, the...
i love my family
during transitions like these, you often reflect on the people in your life with whom you are the closest. and over the past few weeks i have had the opportunity to reflect on my family and how much i love them. my parents and my sisters are the most important people in my world. they have given to me sacrificially, forgiven me continuously, and loved me unconditionally. i love them deeply and...
